27.08.2015 - Cath Brooksbank and Claire Johnson of LifeTrain state a case in favour of extending personnel training for professors to all research staff.
Replying to a comment by Charles E. Leiserson and Chuck McVinney (Nature 523, 279–281; 2015) who call for leadership training for all science professors, Brooksbank and Johnson claim that modern cross-disciplinary and team-based research in the biomedical sciences particularly calls for new approaches to lifelong learning and continuing professional development among all biomedical professionals.
Brooksbank and Johnson continue by laying out the core principles of the IMI-funded LifeTrain initiative, which comprises employers, professional and scientific bodies, course providers and individual scientists, to develop a framework for implementing a cultural change in continuing professional development for biomedical scientists. In short, LifeTrain helps biomedical staff to recognise, and make the most of, the competencies that they need as their careers progress.
