My description of on-course® on-course® provides a comprehensive picture of postgraduate biomedical education and training in Europe. It serves as the most efficient search tool in this respect, allowing me and others to find courses which match my needs and also constraints (time, cost, travel, language, etc.) through relevant filters and search terms. It has been developed and is maintained by people who 'sit in the same boat', be it as course providers, as course seekers, as employers, as professional bodies or as an individual biomedical professional no matter to which sector he/she belongs. This is certainly the reason why it's such a perfect fit for purpose. Recognising that there is still room for improvement and optimisation, on-course® has been the answer to the biomedical research community in Europe and elsewhere for career planning and optimised continuing professional development. Features I would recommend for the new release of on-course® I hope for the following improvements/additions: easier handling of keyword based searches (the long drop-down lists have been a bit clumsy and time-consuming) more guidance for my career planning more extended information on recognition, accreditation, acknowledgement schemes job posts automated alerts on upcoming courses in areas of my interest information about trends and gaps more interactions with peers, colleagues, experts, etc. user-based ratings of courses that I can refer to tailored information on scholarship and bursary opportunities and free of charge courses (particularly when on-line).

Features I would recommend for the new release of on-course® I would like to see the addition of a bulletin board or similar where announcements could be made for a limited time under certain topics. The topics could be scientific conferences, research funding, open research positions etc.

We start this edition with the slide show containing some informative slides from the presentations of the participants of the Strategic Coordination Board meeting which took place on 5-6 September 2013 in Barcelona. The cover image this time is inspired by pharmacogenetics, pharmacogenomics in the context of development of new drugs and personalised medicine. The title for our case study this month is "on-course® keyword search". Find the right courses using the smart keyword combination, e.g. "personalised" AND "medicine". In the section share you'll find a collection of links to the European organisations which deal with the personalised medicine as well as links to useful resources, further reading and university courses. Additionally, we show an example which courses could be found using keywords 'personalised medicine' on alternative portals. The keyword search using personalised medicine returns about 1282 courses because of high incedence of the word medicine. If you use as keyword "personalised" AND "medicine" your search will return about 20 courses. Among them 6 master programmes (1 taught and 5 research) and 14 short courses (CPD). After the visual check we compiled the list - including related keywords - containing only 10 courses which meet all the search criteria and are available on-line.

The average numbers of the new courses per month for the last twelve months (on-course® statistics) were 33 Master programmes, 10 PhD Programmes and 43 Short courses (CPD). Using these numbers we built three interactive gauges (see above) showing the interpolated numbers of entered courses. Now you can make a rough estimation about the number of entered courses on the on-course.eu platform by type. The month values can be calculated for each month up to September 2014. Our users can now select from more than 5200 online searchable Master programmes, PhD programmes and short courses for Continuing Professional Development (CPD). As you can see the on-course.eu platform course count is positive as well as predictable. So, you can count on us!
The feature of this month's edition of inside_ON-COURSE is a reading options selector. Click on the checkboxes and select your personal reading options by clicking on the 'show' button. This interactive notation helps in understanding the current database structure, it simplifies the modifying and preparation for possible alteration and migration, it facilitates the prototyping of the new releases and versions. Course on Translational Research and Medicine Development: The C-COMEND Course is a course consisting of an introductory e-learning (~24 hours student investment time) followed by a 5-day face-to-face workshop. The course is intended for PhD students in the second half of their PhD and early postdocs who are involved in translational research. The course will empower participants to make a difference in translational medicine through inspiration and awareness.
